Kurtis was founded by Louis Kuretzky in 1968 and operated from a single location in Warren, Michigan, as a wholesaler of counter-tops and stock kitchen & bath cabinets. In 1969, sons Howard and Marty joined the business. In 1971, Kurtis opened its first retail showroom in Detroit with the revolutionary concept of providing on-site inventory to service do-it-yourself clients and small contractors. Kurtis has grown this business model to 5 locations in southeastern Michigan, and now incorporates semi-custom cabinetry in the offering for clients. The growth required a move to a larger warehouse and distribution facility in Livonia.
Louis retired in 1986; Marty assumed responsibility for wholesale sales and Howard took charge of operations. In 1994, Wayne Weintraub joined the company as Vice-President of Operations to facilitate the changes in the business necessary for continued growth and success.
The economy was strong and Kurtis realized that many clients wanted a full-service kitchen & bath remodeling experience. In 1999 Kurtis made a bold move and developed a full-service installation division providing carpentry, electrical, plumbing, drywall repair, tile and flooring services to retail and wholesale clients. The installation division proved to be very successful and Kurtis has since added a handyman service for smaller remodeling jobs.
During the last recession, the need for value-based products was very apparent. Kurtis was able to work with vendors to provide the quality and pricing needs of clients. The Kurtis product offering is presently categorized into four groupings: kitchen cabinets & vanities, countertops, plumbing supplies and appliances. Unlike any other retailer, Kurtis has a manufacturing facility which offers cabinet modifications and makes custom countertops… including granite, laminate and Corian.
Kurtis’ future relies on innovative ideas and family-owned values. The third generation of the Kurtis family is now in place for continued success. Continued growth and expansion is underway to insure that Kurtis will continue to bring value-based remodeling programs to the metro-Detroit market.
Howard started at Kurtis Kitchen at its inception in 1969. Over the past 46 years he has done every job pertaining to the operations, manufacturing and sales for the company. In 1994, Howard became President of Kurtis after the retirement of the founder, Louis Kuretzky. He has been affiliated with many different organizations and industry related buying groups. As one of the founding members of the KraftMaid Cabinetry Dealer Council, Howard has been instrumental in helping to shape the direction KraftMaid Cabinetry services its dealers nationwide. His knowledge and industry experience on a national level has brought Kurtis to where it is today – a respected leader in the Kitchen and Bath industry.
Wayne came to Kurtis in 1994 with 11 years of experience in exterior building products from U.S. Steel, and 10 years of experience in advertising and marketing with Entertainment Publications. Wayne is responsible for Advertising & Marketing, Information Technology, recruiting and corporate communication for Kurtis. His marketing programs have enabled Kurtis to be recognized by Kitchen & Bath Design News with an Industry Leadership Award for the “Most Innovative Kitchen or Bath Retail Marketing Effort”. He has helped to position Kurtis as one of the most trusted providers of cabinetry and kitchen & bath remodeling services in the greater Metro-Detroit area.
Aaron is the 3rd generation of Kuretzky at Kurtis and has been working here since he was in his teens. After finishing school, Aaron concentrated on the installation aspects of kitchens and bathrooms, managing the crews and working on making our processes more efficient. These fundamental skills were put to good use when, over the next 7 years of his career, he transitioned to the design and sale of kitchen and bathroom remodeling projects. This occurred during our economy’s toughest times, and taught him how to provide customers with the greatest value for their investment. Now a partner, one of his primary tasks is to create the vision and provide the implementation of our new and remodeled showrooms – while maintaining the family standards and traditions that have guided us through the years.
David graduated from Michigan State University’s Eli Broad College of Business with honors. He is a very determined, hard-working man with a passion for life and uses his well-developed business skills to run our Wholesale division. His previous experience was in the Entertainment Industry and so he brings a unique perspective to Kurtis that has helped to re-shape many of our programs. We are very grateful to have his knowledge and skills.
