Combining the Old With the New In a Vintage-Modern Kitchen

Kitchen Remodeling Jan 14

You’ve probably heard the saying a million times before, “Out with the old, in with the new.” In many ways, that’s great. It helps you to stay organized, prevents clutter, and allows you to stay current on styles and trends. But there’s nothing wrong with keeping a little nostalgia alive around the home, too. If you’re one of those types of people that has a deep appreciation for the past, yet still wants to get the get the best return on investment possible during a remodel project, a great solution is to think vintage-modern for your kitchen.

  1. Keep the original look and design of your entire house alive during a kitchen remodel. Do you happen to live in a home or apartment that was built long ago, and still features the charm and character of that era? Try keeping it alive during your kitchen remodel. Don’t make your new style so modern that it clashes with the overall feel of the rest of your home. An experienced kitchen design expert will be able to help you select the perfect style choices to complement the rest of your home.
  2. Restore your hardwoods instead of replacing them. Many people think that you have to replace all of your flooring with new hardwoods or tile during a kitchen remodel. In some cases, that may be true. But, if your space already has original hardwoods that are a bit aged, try having them restored instead. The divots and scratches can be clean up, but left intact, giving your floors some added character and appeal. Your beautifully restored, original hardwood floors will be a talking point for all of your guests.
  3. Opt for modern displays for old accents. Don’t feel like you need to keep your old, outdated cabinetry around in order to have a vintage kitchen. If the time were to come where you’d like to sell your home, this decision may come back to haunt you. Instead, choose modern style cabinets and shelving that can proudly showcase your vintage and antique pieces. Open shelves or glass front cabinets can display vintage storage containers, dishes, or cups. This option will allow you to enjoy the perks of a vintage look in a kitchen that will truly add more value to your home for years to come.
  4. Consider vintage hardware. Another option to consider if you’re looking to add some vintage flare in the middle of a total kitchen overhaul is to incorporate antique (or antique-looking) hardware throughout your kitchen. This might include drawer pulls, door handles, or switch plates and outlet covers. You might be surprised at how much of a statement those few details can make when incorporated within the overall design plan.
  5. Combine modern staples with vintage décor. Another great way to add a classic vintage feel to your kitchen is to infuse vintage décor into the updated space. Artwork, fabric choices, centerpieces and table settings, and even lighting choices can all provide that statement that you’re looking for while still offering you and your guests a place to walk into that is familiar and inviting.
  6. Bring a little country into the city. If you are really determined to turn your kitchen into a full-fledged vintage masterpiece, consider a farmhouse style look for your space. There are many possible options that include a modern farmhouse apron sink, butcher block or even concrete countertops, or wood planks on the walls; all of these can provide a spectacular palate to display your vintage pieces without appearing overwhelming when you first walk into the room.

From start to finish Kurtis was a great company to work with. From the initial contact and design concept with Gregory Holster to the cabinet drop off team, the install team led by project manager Jeff Tuomi and the countertop company, the project was on time and all work was performed beyond expectations. This was greatly appreciated seeing as it was completed on December 23. All the people involved were professional and did an excellent job.

Shanna was our project consultant. Picking out cabinets along with counters can be somewhat overwhelming but her knowledge & experience helped us make the right decisions. Dylan & Juwan unloaded truck & Dylan check off ship ticket to make sure all boxes were accounted for. Courteous & pleasant to talk to…nice job of stacking everything neatly in our garage. We couldn't be more pleased with the service & so happy with our kitchen

We recently worked with Lauren on cabinetry for a master bathroom renovation. She was great to work on the design and selections. Lauren was efficient and responsive from cabinet selection through ordering. Our overall installation was smooth. We had some unforeseen circumstances impacting our ability to accept delivery of our cabinets on the initial agreed upon date. Kurtis was very accommodating in rescheduling delivery given our project challenges. We couldn't be happier with our cabinets for this project.

We had complete renovations to our kitchen and main bathroom. From start to finish, the design with Shanna was exactly what we asked for and Jeff stayed on top of the renovations, communicating each step of the way. Every worker was professional and the final product is elegant and functional. We were very happy with Kurtis and would choose Shanna and Jeff again.

We love our new kitchen! Kurtis Kitchen & Bath did an outstanding job, and Adrian at the Clarkston location was exceptional to work with—creative, patient, and really listened to what we wanted. The project was well-organized, and we went from demo to a fully functioning kitchen in just 30 days. Highly recommend!
