Four Things You Must Know Before Heading to the Showroom

Kitchen Remodeling Tips for homeowners Oct 19

A kitchen should accommodate your lifestyle and cooking needs, provide the space your home needs for eating and storage, and not contrast with your home’s architecture. Many factors figure largely when planning a kitchen. Before you make any decisions on appliances or cabinets, set some goals for your new space to guide you. Read on for tips that will help you design a new kitchen that meets all your needs while working in concert with your lifestyle.

Flow and organization

A kitchen can look amazing but function horribly. You may love the look of a kitchen you see on TV or online, but that does not mean it will function in your space. Ask yourself some questions.

What is the focal point of your kitchen? Can you change it if you want to? What exactly do you want from your kitchen? Is organization important to you and how do you want that organization to look? How will you use the space? What improvements do you want? What do you love about the kitchen you have? What do you hate? The answers to these questions will help guide you as you plan your kitchen remodel and keep you on target, hopefully avoiding a decision you may regret after your new kitchen is done.

Cabinets

Consider more than the looks of cabinets; keep organization in mind as you settle on what you want. Knowing what you want and need helps narrow the selection. Make sure you have some ideas about colors or stains, having considered color balance in relation to the rest of your kitchen.

When you view potential selections, put your hands on the cabinets to make sure you like the feel of the materials. The choice of materials and designs should flow with your other elements, not clash with them.

Function

Knowing what you love to look at is good, but will it work for your space? Will it serve your needs or hinder them? Make sure your new kitchen leaves you the workspace you need for cooking. Consider the hardware and how special storage features affect what you choose.

Ask an expert for help on door types, drawer options, innovations like pull-out larder units, bottle racks with sliding rail systems, deep pan drawers, corner carousels, and more. Bring examples that please your eye, but also have examples of functions you desire or that help your current needs. Come with an idea of what you want and what will serve you, but be flexible with the experts as they may have solutions you haven’t considered.

Present Your Ideas

Go to the showroom with ideas in hand. Bring a digital device to show what you’re looking for, but make sure the screen is large enough to adequately view your images. If your device storage is limited, take advantage of the cloud, storage space shared around the world that you can access with any internet connection.

Google DriveiCloudOneDrive, and Dropbox provide some space free, with pay options for more storage capacity. You could also bring a binder with cutout pictures from magazines or pictures you found online printed on paper. Make sure you have a camera on hand at the showroom to add to your planning ideas.

Planning goes a long way in a kitchen remodel project, helping you identify what you need versus what you want. Make your new kitchen a place you want to be and one that works for you. From start to finish Kurtis was a great company to work with. From the initial contact and design concept with Gregory Holster to the cabinet drop off team, the install team led by project manager Jeff Tuomi and the countertop company, the project was on time and all work was performed beyond expectations. This was greatly appreciated seeing as it was completed on December 23. All the people involved were professional and did an excellent job.

Shanna was our project consultant. Picking out cabinets along with counters can be somewhat overwhelming but her knowledge & experience helped us make the right decisions. Dylan & Juwan unloaded truck & Dylan check off ship ticket to make sure all boxes were accounted for. Courteous & pleasant to talk to…nice job of stacking everything neatly in our garage. We couldn't be more pleased with the service & so happy with our kitchen

We recently worked with Lauren on cabinetry for a master bathroom renovation. She was great to work on the design and selections. Lauren was efficient and responsive from cabinet selection through ordering. Our overall installation was smooth. We had some unforeseen circumstances impacting our ability to accept delivery of our cabinets on the initial agreed upon date. Kurtis was very accommodating in rescheduling delivery given our project challenges. We couldn't be happier with our cabinets for this project.

We had complete renovations to our kitchen and main bathroom. From start to finish, the design with Shanna was exactly what we asked for and Jeff stayed on top of the renovations, communicating each step of the way. Every worker was professional and the final product is elegant and functional. We were very happy with Kurtis and would choose Shanna and Jeff again.

We love our new kitchen! Kurtis Kitchen & Bath did an outstanding job, and Adrian at the Clarkston location was exceptional to work with—creative, patient, and really listened to what we wanted. The project was well-organized, and we went from demo to a fully functioning kitchen in just 30 days. Highly recommend!
