Kitchen Details: Choosing a Countertop Edge

Countertops Kitchen Remodeling Dec 21

It was a big decision choosing the right countertop for your kitchen, but you may not expect the next question: “Which edging would you like?” If you’re not prepared, it can feel like an overwhelming choice, which is where this guide comes in. Here are some of the more common countertop edges available on the market.

Eased

This is the simplest and most straightforward of countertop edging profiles. Sometimes called a straight edge or a flat edge, the eased edge features a square profile with the edges slightly rounded to eliminate sharp corners. This edge profile is great for traditional kitchens, and in smaller kitchens, it creates an illusion of a larger space.

Bullnose

The bullnose is one of the most popular edge profiles and features a completely rounded edge (also known as a full bullnose). A unique feature is that spills don’t immediately hit the floor—liquids follow the curvature. Also available is the demi-bullnose, or half bullnose, which has a sharper edge underneath. Both have a classic look that complements any countertop material, and the round edge is easy on elbows, making it a good choice for family kitchens.

Bevel

A beveled edge profile wouldn’t be out of place in a contemporary kitchen. The top corner has been cut away, typically at a 45-degree angle. This produces sleek lines and crisp edges that look right at home with contemporary minimalist design features. A variation you may find is the double bevel, which has a beveled corner on the top and bottom that still leaves room for a flat edge.

Waterfall

One option for an edge profile is the dramatic waterfall. A second piece of countertop is connected to the upper surface via a mitered edge. The finished effect is a countertop that drops off of the edge of an island to the floor. Ultimately, the waterfall edge creates a stunning effect that dominates the kitchen.

Ogee

Another classic edge profile, ogee is delicate-looking and intricate. Traditionally, the ogee edge has two curves, but the details may vary by creator. This is the perfect option for kitchens wanting an elegant look, but it does take a little more maintenance to keep clean of crumbs and dust.

Chiseled

If you have a granite or quartz countertop, you may want to consider a raw, chiseled edge for a rugged, rustic feel. This unconventional edge profile offers a warm and unique detail in the kitchen that will make your countertop the center of attention.Think about the design of your kitchen and consider the countertop edging to be the icing on the cake. It’s a small detail that should complement your kitchen’s style. Your local remodeling experts can offer advice on what works with your particular countertop material.

From start to finish Kurtis was a great company to work with. From the initial contact and design concept with Gregory Holster to the cabinet drop off team, the install team led by project manager Jeff Tuomi and the countertop company, the project was on time and all work was performed beyond expectations. This was greatly appreciated seeing as it was completed on December 23. All the people involved were professional and did an excellent job.

Shanna was our project consultant. Picking out cabinets along with counters can be somewhat overwhelming but her knowledge & experience helped us make the right decisions. Dylan & Juwan unloaded truck & Dylan check off ship ticket to make sure all boxes were accounted for. Courteous & pleasant to talk to…nice job of stacking everything neatly in our garage. We couldn't be more pleased with the service & so happy with our kitchen

We recently worked with Lauren on cabinetry for a master bathroom renovation. She was great to work on the design and selections. Lauren was efficient and responsive from cabinet selection through ordering. Our overall installation was smooth. We had some unforeseen circumstances impacting our ability to accept delivery of our cabinets on the initial agreed upon date. Kurtis was very accommodating in rescheduling delivery given our project challenges. We couldn't be happier with our cabinets for this project.

We had complete renovations to our kitchen and main bathroom. From start to finish, the design with Shanna was exactly what we asked for and Jeff stayed on top of the renovations, communicating each step of the way. Every worker was professional and the final product is elegant and functional. We were very happy with Kurtis and would choose Shanna and Jeff again.

We love our new kitchen! Kurtis Kitchen & Bath did an outstanding job, and Adrian at the Clarkston location was exceptional to work with—creative, patient, and really listened to what we wanted. The project was well-organized, and we went from demo to a fully functioning kitchen in just 30 days. Highly recommend!
