How to Make a Small Bath Look Bigger

If there’s one true thing about most old houses, it’s small bathrooms. Newer homes have ever-larger baths, but that doesn’t change the fact that the one you have might feel tiny and cramped. Here are a few design ideas that will trick your eye into seeing a larger space. These transformative tricks can easily turn remodeled bathrooms into cozy spaces that you’ll love spending time in.
Colors
A cardinal rule of design is that light colors make a room look larger, and it’s no exception in the bathroom. A white vanity, white walls, and white floor will make your small space feel bigger, but if you are concerned about a monochromatic look, use linens and decorative pieces to create a splash of color. Pastel colors also add the feeling of serenity, which is always welcome.
Vanities
Trade in a bulk vanity for a pedestal sink. It will save a tremendous amount of floor space, but you’ll probably have to reorganize a linen closet and find an alternative storage solution.
Tiling
Using larger tiles reduces the volume of grout lines, which can make a room feel boxed in. Choosing a grout color close in tone to that of the tile will also reduce that grid-like feeling. As with wall colors, going with a lighter floor color will also make the room feel bigger and brighter.
Mirrors
Mirrors reflect light and color, and adding them to the bathroom is an easy way to make a space seem bigger. Add as large of a mirror as you can above the sink (frameless feels bigger) to add the feeling of space without adding square footage.
Lighting
Brighten a room with additional lighting. Add recessed lights to the ceiling for overall lighting, and add wall sconces for style and warmth. For a more expensive and permanent transformation, you can add skylights and windows, if possible.
Open Shelves
Trade in cabinet doors for open shelves, which will transform the face of the room, as cabinets give the sensation of being closed off. Towels act as built-in accessories, and woven baskets can be used to artfully store bathroom supplies.
Visual Obstructions
To make the room appear larger, eliminate visual obstructions, including excessive clutter and objects that stick out, like unnecessary wall shelves. Another remodeling decision you can make is to exchange a frosted glass shower door with clear glass or a pull-away shower curtain. When you open the door to the bathroom, the eye will be able to see all the way to the walls, which will give the illusion of a larger room.Don’t feel held back by a tiny bathroom. With the right planning, tools, and materials, your small bathroom can open up and feel larger and roomier than ever before.

From start to finish Kurtis was a great company to work with. From the initial contact and design concept with Gregory Holster to the cabinet drop off team, the install team led by project manager Jeff Tuomi and the countertop company, the project was on time and all work was performed beyond expectations. This was greatly appreciated seeing as it was completed on December 23. All the people involved were professional and did an excellent job.
Shanna was our project consultant. Picking out cabinets along with counters can be somewhat overwhelming but her knowledge & experience helped us make the right decisions. Dylan & Juwan unloaded truck & Dylan check off ship ticket to make sure all boxes were accounted for. Courteous & pleasant to talk to…nice job of stacking everything neatly in our garage. We couldn't be more pleased with the service & so happy with our kitchen
We recently worked with Lauren on cabinetry for a master bathroom renovation. She was great to work on the design and selections. Lauren was efficient and responsive from cabinet selection through ordering. Our overall installation was smooth. We had some unforeseen circumstances impacting our ability to accept delivery of our cabinets on the initial agreed upon date. Kurtis was very accommodating in rescheduling delivery given our project challenges. We couldn't be happier with our cabinets for this project.
We had complete renovations to our kitchen and main bathroom. From start to finish, the design with Shanna was exactly what we asked for and Jeff stayed on top of the renovations, communicating each step of the way. Every worker was professional and the final product is elegant and functional. We were very happy with Kurtis and would choose Shanna and Jeff again.
We love our new kitchen! Kurtis Kitchen & Bath did an outstanding job, and Adrian at the Clarkston location was exceptional to work with—creative, patient, and really listened to what we wanted. The project was well-organized, and we went from demo to a fully functioning kitchen in just 30 days. Highly recommend!
