For people looking to make big changes in their kitchens or bathrooms, there is nothing quite as dramatic as new tile. Choosing to add different colors and styles of tile when doing kitchen remodeling in Livonia or bathroom remodeling, can be a great way to cover imperfections or just add a bit of flair.

Tile is very versatile, and it can look great on a wall behind the vanities or as a dramatic backsplash. Yet, there are still choices to be made because there are so many different styles of tiles. Plus, they come in a multitude of shapes and colors.

When it comes to adding tile in large areas, it can be considered an investment, and most homeowners want to make sure they are making a good one. Having samples to view side by side with paint colors and other elements that are already present in the room, will help ensure that the choices being made will suit the space.

Here are nine tile tips that give a little guidance on ways to best combine tiles for a result that is sure to be pleasing for years to come.

Don’t Let Things Get Too Busy

When doing kitchen remodeling, Livonia homeowners are fond of adding oblong mosaic tiles because they really make a statement. They are often used in backsplashes in the kitchen, but they can also be found in remodeled bathrooms. It is important to keep these bolder tiles in a smaller area and to combine them with larger tiles that are plainer. Too many bold tiles in one room can make the design overwhelming, and the eyes have a difficult time finding a place to rest.

Limit Patterns to One Surface

Many homeowners like to add a pattern when putting tiles in the kitchen or the bathroom. Patterns can look amazing; however, they should be limited to one surface. If there is a lovely set of Moroccan tiles on the accent wall be hind the vanities, then tile elsewhere in the room should be kept plain. Like wise, if a person opts for a busy tile pattern on one wall, the tile that is placed on the other walls should be simple and of one solid color.

Don’t Be Afraid to Scale

Many remodeled bathrooms will contain several different tiles in various scales, and this usually works out to good effect. Having tiny tiles in the shower or around the bathtub, with medium-sized tiles on the wall, can look very sleek and modern. It can be much easier to pull off this type of multi-tiled look when all the tiles are in either the same color or in a very mono chromatic color scheme.

Stone Can be a Neutral

When a room has natural stone, this can be considered a neutral option as opposed to a tile. That means the tile that is put in the room can be dramatic and with a graphic design. The natural stone won’t contrast with the tile patterns because it is too neutral to really compete for the eye’s attention.

Play with Matte

When all the various tile options used in a particular space are matte, there can be more variation. Remodeled bathrooms with matte wall tiles can be mixed and matched more liberally without looking too busy. The various materials and olors in matte add a certain tactile appeal that isn’t present in glossier styles.

Combining Matte and Glossy

If an all matte space doesn’t appeal to a homeowner, combining matte and glossy when doing kitchen remodeling in Livonia is an option. By juxtaposing matte against glossy, the tiles can be of a similar shape or size and still look visually appealing. For instance, having glossy subway tiles on the walls look quite nice when paired with a patterned matte tile backsplash. This works especially well when the color schemes are monochromatic, neutral, or closely related.

Same Color, Different Shape

When looking at remodeled bathrooms in recent years, there are plenty of homes that opt for tile walls. This approach works well when a contrasting grout is added. The tiles pop without being too busy. This effect looks modern and fun when the walls are outfitted in a glossy white subway tile with a dark gray grout. The overall effect is a look that is somehow modern and classic at the same time.  If the contrasting grout makes too much of a statement, the grout can be matched to the tile for a more subtle look that can be quite soothing to the eyes.

Keep Patterns Consistent, Change Colors

When doing kitchen remodeling in Livonia, the homeowner may opt for tiles in various sizes and colors. This can still make a cohesive look if the patterns are kept the same. Make sure the shape of the tiles match each other and there is more room to experiment with the scale and the color contrasting. For instance, if using two different shades of gray tile in two different sizes, make sure that they are all rectangular and form a brick pattern. Otherwise, the eyes will continually bounce from shape to shape, and make the room feel cluttered or anxious.

Keep Color Palettes Restricted

When a room, such as a remodeled bathroom, has a lot of different areas that are being tiled, the color palette should be limited. While that doesn’t mean everything has to be one solid color, it just works better if a very specific color scheme is chosen, and all the tiles and grouts fit within that scheme.

Consider Professional Help for Kitchen & Bathroom Remodeling Projects

While some people can handle adding new tile to their kitchen or bathroom, many people find this to be a painstaking task that calls for professional skills. In Livonia, homeowners can work with tile pros who know how to lay the tile perfectly, and who understand the concepts behind harmonious designs and color schemes. The homeowner can still have major input into the project, and the proc an ensure that the results are spectacular.

From start to finish Kurtis was a great company to work with. From the initial contact and design concept with Gregory Holster to the cabinet drop off team, the install team led by project manager Jeff Tuomi and the countertop company, the project was on time and all work was performed beyond expectations. This was greatly appreciated seeing as it was completed on December 23. All the people involved were professional and did an excellent job.

Shanna was our project consultant. Picking out cabinets along with counters can be somewhat overwhelming but her knowledge & experience helped us make the right decisions. Dylan & Juwan unloaded truck & Dylan check off ship ticket to make sure all boxes were accounted for. Courteous & pleasant to talk to…nice job of stacking everything neatly in our garage. We couldn't be more pleased with the service & so happy with our kitchen

We recently worked with Lauren on cabinetry for a master bathroom renovation. She was great to work on the design and selections. Lauren was efficient and responsive from cabinet selection through ordering. Our overall installation was smooth. We had some unforeseen circumstances impacting our ability to accept delivery of our cabinets on the initial agreed upon date. Kurtis was very accommodating in rescheduling delivery given our project challenges. We couldn't be happier with our cabinets for this project.

We had complete renovations to our kitchen and main bathroom. From start to finish, the design with Shanna was exactly what we asked for and Jeff stayed on top of the renovations, communicating each step of the way. Every worker was professional and the final product is elegant and functional. We were very happy with Kurtis and would choose Shanna and Jeff again.

We love our new kitchen! Kurtis Kitchen & Bath did an outstanding job, and Adrian at the Clarkston location was exceptional to work with—creative, patient, and really listened to what we wanted. The project was well-organized, and we went from demo to a fully functioning kitchen in just 30 days. Highly recommend!
