Top Kitchen Design Styles for the Coming Year
Kitchen Remodeling Jan 17
We’ve taken a look at kitchen trends, but what about styles? Styles tend to be different than trends insofar as they’re composition. A tile floor with bold patterns is a trend. But Cottage is a style. The style might imply a trend, but it governs the overall feel of the kitchen and is not relegated to this or that improvement. Those embarking upon the task of remodeling their kitchen can draw inspiration from these styles that becoming more and more popular in 2018.
The Contemporary Kitchen Style
Saying a style is “contemporary” is a bit misleading, since even Victorian was “contemporary” at one time or another, but consider the fact that more and more people are inviting others over to cook with them as opposed to for them. The look will feel like a hodgepodge of this and that, but there’s going to be ample room and ample seating, often typified by a bar-like area with built in stools and countertop on which to mingle. It’s going to be more open than years past, and you’ll be able to see other rooms of the house from within it. That’s the contemporary style. The kitchen is a hub of social activity.
Old World Style
In stark contrast to the Contemporary Kitchen is the Old-World Kitchen. Old World kitchens employ Victorian quality craftsmanship and have a tendency to be darker and more enclosed than contemporary kitchens. If you think your kitchen should be a kitchen, and your dining room should be a dining room, then this is the style for you. Lots of mahogany, and ornate woodwork typify this style. It’s not for everyone, but they’re quite beautiful to look at.
The Coastal Kitchen
The Coastal Kitchen blends many of the aspects of a contemporary kitchen, with some unique aspects that have earned it its name. Coastal Kitchens employ cool shades of green, blue, aquamarine, white, and sandy beige. Like Contemporary Kitchens, Coastal Kitchens are open, have plenty of seating near, in, and around the kitchen proper, and are great for kitchen-centered get togethers.
The Mediterranean Kitchen
This European style is built on the mold of the Old World Style, but has its own unique accents. Particularly, it looks and feels more rustic. Instead of ornate woodwork, think distressed finishes with warmer tones. Think rough metallic textures; copper pots, and rush seats. For those considering a kitchen remodel, there’s a number of styles on which you can base your dream kitchen. If you like traditional kitchens more so than contemporary, there are always contemporary accents that you can blend with the old-world style. If you like open contemporary kitchens, don’t shy away from adding reddish hewed cabinets, or some style to the woodwork. No one says you have to fit the mold.

From start to finish Kurtis was a great company to work with. From the initial contact and design concept with Gregory Holster to the cabinet drop off team, the install team led by project manager Jeff Tuomi and the countertop company, the project was on time and all work was performed beyond expectations. This was greatly appreciated seeing as it was completed on December 23. All the people involved were professional and did an excellent job.
Shanna was our project consultant. Picking out cabinets along with counters can be somewhat overwhelming but her knowledge & experience helped us make the right decisions. Dylan & Juwan unloaded truck & Dylan check off ship ticket to make sure all boxes were accounted for. Courteous & pleasant to talk to…nice job of stacking everything neatly in our garage. We couldn't be more pleased with the service & so happy with our kitchen
We recently worked with Lauren on cabinetry for a master bathroom renovation. She was great to work on the design and selections. Lauren was efficient and responsive from cabinet selection through ordering. Our overall installation was smooth. We had some unforeseen circumstances impacting our ability to accept delivery of our cabinets on the initial agreed upon date. Kurtis was very accommodating in rescheduling delivery given our project challenges. We couldn't be happier with our cabinets for this project.
We had complete renovations to our kitchen and main bathroom. From start to finish, the design with Shanna was exactly what we asked for and Jeff stayed on top of the renovations, communicating each step of the way. Every worker was professional and the final product is elegant and functional. We were very happy with Kurtis and would choose Shanna and Jeff again.
We love our new kitchen! Kurtis Kitchen & Bath did an outstanding job, and Adrian at the Clarkston location was exceptional to work with—creative, patient, and really listened to what we wanted. The project was well-organized, and we went from demo to a fully functioning kitchen in just 30 days. Highly recommend!
