What Is the Difference Between Refacing & Refinishing Cabinets?

Cabinet Refacing

In a nutshell, cabinet refacing is replacing all visible parts on the surface of your cabinets. The new components are custom manufactured to fit your existing frames exactly, and you are often able to choose from numerous door styles, wood species, stains, glazes, and hardware as part of the customization. A thick veneer is bonded to your existing frames to complete the visual transformation. Once all of the components are in, the refacing process often only takes a few days to complete.

Cabinet Refinishing

If you are comfortable with most of the components of your cabinets, such as the hardware and doors, then cabinet refinishing is the way to go. With cabinet refinishing, your cabinets will be cleaned to remove any oil or dirt, sanded down, and sprayed to lay a foundation for the painting process. In many cases, any flaws in the cabinets are then repaired, and the cabinets are sanded and sprayed again. Finally, a conversion varnish is applied. Essentially, your cabinets are given a new finish—hence the name.
